University of North Carolina at Greensboro, NC, Features MFA Thesis Exhibitions

The Weatherspoon Art Museum at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (NC) is pleased to present the exhibition, 2009 UNCG MFA Thesis Exhibition, which will be on view from May 3 - 31, 2009.

The exhibition features work by six candidates in the University of North Carolina at Greensboro's Department of Art graduate program: Anthony DiSarno, Karen Maness, Scott Mayo, Mandy Newham, James Porter, and Jules Rochon.

In their work, Anthony DiSarno and Jules Rochon explore how personal identity is tied to notions of the body. DiSarno focuses on man's tendency to control and interrupt natural development when it does not conform to preconceived ideas, while Rochon investigates the experience of locating oneself within places that seem familiar, yet are not quite recognizable.

Karen Maness uses materials such as Ivory soap and dried rose petals to dismantle notions of beauty. Her works are tied to memory, identity, performance, and ritual. Mandy Newham approaches landscape through the lens of psychogeography with a series of drawings that map out her walks.

By layering many different types of found images with his own drawing, Scott Mayo investigates how US newspaper and television coverage of wars and other events happening in the world seem to engender a sense of passive detachment. James Porter's paintings consist of a series of anachronistic vignettes that combine both real and fictional events and people.
