Mica Gallery in Bakersville, NC, Features Works by Sondra Dorn

Mica, a cooperative gallery of fine contemporary craft in Bakersville, NC, will present Opaque Transparencies - Mixed Media Paintings by Sondra Dorn, on view from May 1 - June 30, 2013. A reception will be held on May 25, from 5-8pm.

Dorn’s remarkable work has always encouraged expansion of our visual perspectives, but this newest work comes following a year of utilizing new technology made possible because she was awarded the Regional Artist Project Grant. This most recent evolution of her work promises to please and further challenge our senses.

This exhibition welcomes her back to the Mitchell County area, where she lived for many years. After receiving her MFA from Washington University, Dorn was a CORE fellowship student at Penland School of Crafts, then became an Artist in Residence at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and returned to Penland to spend 3 years as an Artist in Residence. She now lives in Asheville, NC, where she is a full time studio artist. Dorn returns to the area to show her newest work where many who have shared in her journey welcome her warmly.

Dorn’s innovative mixed media paintings explore the world either through a microscope or from an airplane, creating two amazingly coherent visions. Through a study of pattern, color and composition, these visions are then interpreted through the use of linen and transparent papers that bring the work back to a human scale. Best described by the artist, “through many stitches, marks and layers; I build my landscapes by hand, using processes that are slow and intimate. I engage with the forms I’ve discovered in the world around me, dissolving and reconstituting them with fabric, thread, paints, pencils and acrylic mediums. I experience these re-imagined landscapes as close-up details and distant topographies simultaneously. I hope that my work invites you to take the time to enjoy these shifting spaces and perspectives.” Her ability to perceive and reflect the visual connectedness between the close up and the very far away, micro to macro, engages the viewer in exploring the world in a new way.

The 14 full time exhibiting artist members of Mica welcome Dorn for the first of many exhibits over the coming year. Mica is a cooperative gallery featuring fine contemporary craft. A visit to Mica will include meeting an active studio artist and exploring their work, as well as the many other members represented by an array of functional and sculptural ceramics, wood and glass. Experience the magic of handmade through an artist’s and your own eyes.
