June Issue 2009
Somerhill Gallery
in Durham, NC, Features Works by Patrick Glover
Somerhill Gallery in
Durham, NC, will present an exhibit of recent paintings on canvas
by Patrick Glover, on view from June 7 through July 10, 2009.
Patrick Glover spent his childhood in the rural Finger Lakes region
of upstate New York. He received a four-year, full tuition scholarship
to the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in
New York City where he earned his BFA in 1987. He remained in
New York City for nearly twenty years, working as a freelance
illustrator, designer, muralist and decorative painter while continuing
to pursue his fine art interests. Glover's work has been exhibited
throughout New York City as well as various venues in Georgia,
Washington State, North and South Carolina.
In Glover's Highway Series of paintings, the interaction of a simple natural element with man made surfaces and objects transforms that which is standardized and familiar into something otherworldly, bizarre and disorienting. A commonly experienced moment of perceptual ambiguity becomes a way to suggest questions concerning the role that perception itself plays in our illusions of certainty and sense of reality.
Glover employs traditional painting materials, as well as a digital camera, computer, imaging software, an ink-jet printer and a 2001 Chevy S-10 pickup truck. From the interior of his 2001 Chevy S-10 pickup truck, he photographs the precipitating elements of the peripheral around himself. His initial image captures are, as Glover says, "...a matter of combined foolhardiness and chance. The risks involved in turning off the wipers while taking pictures can be limited by exercising caution. However, I have very little control over many other variables; such as the amount of rain, light, the type of distortion that will be captured or the visual interest of the objects I am passing. Reviewing images after a rainy drive is always surprising."
From there, Glover makes
alterations to images as he draws and paints, while responding
to the needs of each painting, altering material use and methods.
In 2006, Glover was selected by jury to design a project for New
York City's MTA "Arts for Transit" program and also
invited to participate in the Biennale dell'Arte Contemporanea
di Firenze in Florence, Italy. His work was recently included
in the Greenville, NC, Museum exhibit Greenville Collects. Glover
currently lives and works in Charlotte, NC.
