June Issue 2010
Green Rice Gallery
in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Isaac Payne
Green Rice Gallery in
Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibit, Charcoal Cities: Drawings
of People and Places, featuring works by Isaac Payne, on view
from June 4 - 27, 2010.
Charcoal Cities is an exhibition of drawings and mixed media works
on paper that explore our relationship to the modern land/cityscape
and the metaphorical language of images. The imagery and environments
depicted in the exhibit represent people, places and things that
are everywhere in general and yet nowhere specific. Payne
has drawn from imagery of people, places, and structures he has
gathered, over the years, in places where he has lived and travelled. He
then selectively draws from them in a process of reflection and
invention.
Drawing is central to all the works in Charcoal Cities.
However, Payne uses charcoal in conjunction with a variety of
other drawing and painting media, resulting in a subtle range
of color and timbre not commonly associated with charcoal or drawing.
Payne grew up in Tacoma, WA. He received his Bachelor of
Fine Arts degree in painting from the Cleveland Institute of Art
in 2003 and his Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and sculpture
from The City University of New York at Queens College in 2005. His
honors include the 2002 John Paul Wrobbel Painting Prize; the
2001 Mary Seymour Brooks Scholarship for Painting; and the 2000
Sybil J. Gould Scholarship for Excellence in Drawing and Graphic
Arts. Payne is a winner of New American Paintings 2010
Southern Competition, which will feature his art in issue
#88. Payne's work is in the collections of Jayne and Robert Zweig
and Dan K. and Linda Rocker Silverberg.
