City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Claire Farrell

City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, will present an exhibit of recent works by Columbia artist, Claire Farrell, on view from June 20 through July 27, 2013. A reception will be held on June 20, from 6-8pm.

Farrell is a versatile artist who works in a variety of media. She holds degrees from Duke University and the University of South Carolina. Additionally she had studied at printmaking at Santa Raparata Art School in Florence, Italy and at Penland School of Art in North Carolina. The exhibit will include her traditional oil paintings and recent mixed media monotypes.

More traditional in nature are her oil paintings. These include a variety of subjects, including some figure painting, and landscapes of the Carolinas and a recent trip to Italy.

In addition to the more traditional paintings, Farrell has for the past several years been experimenting with mixed media printmaking. The pieces selected for the exhibit are inspired by a recent interest of hers, the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright, his student, Fay Jones, and other artists and architects that influenced Wright. She calls this series “The Wright Stuff.” These works in no way replicate the work of the great master, but are simply an attempt to employ some of his ideas and designs in a different medium and in an unexplored way. The works on paper include one or more of the following techniques: monotype, chine collé, collage, solar plate etching, or drawing.

City Art Gallery is located in the historic Congaree Vista area in Columbia.
