David Eichenberger
We welcome David Eichenberger as our new Regional Emerging Artist-in-Residence. Established in Jan. 2000, the Regional Emerging Artist Residency is a program that provides emerging visual artists with time and space to explore their work in a supportive, thriving, artistic environment. The residency includes a private, rent-free studio with 24-hour access. Recipients are selected through a call to artists held twice a year.
Eichenberger earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration in 2001 from Savannah College of Art and Design. His work has been included in numerous exhibitions including locally at Designbox, the Morning Times, and Rebus Works. His work will soon be included in a show at Gallery 1988, Los Angeles, CA, and the Roanoke Island Festival Park Art Gallery, NC.
Eric McRay
Eric McRay presents
My Beauty Has Value, a body of work created in the medium
of collage (papier collé). Through this work McRay proclaims
his appreciation of the African-American female. To construct
these works he utilizes painted papers, photographic reproductions,
snippets of photographs, scraps of fabric, elements from magazines,
cut and torn paper, water media, and acrylic paint.
McRay earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with honors from
the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD, in 1987.
After training as a designer and working in financial services
and computer sales, McRay began pursuing fine art full-time. His
work has been exhibited throughout the US and can be found in
numerous corporate collections including at the American Tobacco
Campus, Duke University Medical Center, NC State University, UNC-Chapel
Hill, SAS Institute, and Western Wake Hospital. In 2001 The
News & Observer named McRay one of their Artists to
Watch. Metro Magazine named McRay Best Local Artist for
2008.
Melinda Fine
Alchemy is known as the forerunner of modern chemistry but has other philosophical and metaphysical aspects as well. The early alchemists were deeply involved with the art of freeing the part of their psyches that were imprisoned in matter. Melinda Fine's recent collages are illustrations of alchemical equations - proof of the transmutation of lead into gold, body into spirit.
Born in Boston, MA and raised in Greensboro, NC, Fine received her undergraduate degrees in psychology and English, as well as an MFA in creative writing from UNC-Greensboro. She also attended two years of graduate school in graphic design at the School of Design, NCSU, Raleigh, NC. She taught graphic design and typography as a professor of art at Meredith College from 1997 to 2008. She was juried into Artspace in 2003, and has occupied Studio 208 since Dec., 2008.
Each summer Artspace's Summer Artist-in-Residence program provides an established artist with a brief studio opportunity to work on a project of his or her choosing. Artists are selected from a competitive national pool of applicants. Throughout the residency, artists interact with the public in an effort to fulfill Artspace's mission of making the creative process accessible. In addition to working in an open-studio environment, a Meet the Artist evening is organized along with a public slide lecture.
The Summer Artist-in-Residence
also teaches two classes or workshops (one for youths and one
for adults) in conjunction with Artspace's Summer Arts Program.
Following the residency, in Gallery one, the resident presents
an exhibition that is a culmination of the artist's studio work
during the summer.
This summer join us in celebrating the past nine years of the
Summer Artist-in-Residence Program. Reconsidered features the
work of Grimanesa Amorós, Laura Berman, Eileen Doktorski,
Ann Marie Kennedy, IlaSahai Prouty, Carrie Scanga, Anthony Ulinski,
and Sherri Wood.
