SC
City of North Charleston's
Cultural Arts Department in North Charleston, SC, will present
the exhibit, Beauty of Age, featuring paintings and drawings
by Audrey Layne Combs, on view in the North Charleston City Gallery
in the Charleston Area Convention Center from July 1 31, 2009.
Audrey Layne Combs' exhibit is an ongoing investigative body of
work focusing on the aesthetic qualities of the aging body and
the perception of elderly people in American Society. According
to the artist, each painting and drawing "aspires to honor
and celebrate the lives of these individuals, and communicates
their beauty, dignity, worth, and wisdom."
Combs, based in Charleston, holds a BFA in painting from Eastern Kentucky University and an MFA from East Carolina University. She has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in the Southeast region.
The Cultural Arts Department in North Charleston, SC, will also present the exhibit, Charleston Kids with Cameras, featuring photographs on view in the display windows of the Olde North Charleston Meeting Place from July 1 - Aug. 31, 2009.
Charleston Kids with Cameras is an on-going mentorship program formed to help inner city boys and girls see both the world beyond their neighborhoods and the opportunities available to them. Professional photographers serve as mentors for young children as they learn how to take photographs, edit them, and then prepare them for exhibition. The project has been funded with local dollars, including grants from Palmetto Project supporters, John Davis, and John Winthrop.
The Cultural Arts Department is the recipient of the 2000 Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award for the Arts and receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, SC Arts Commission, and the corporate community.
