July Issue 2009
Providence Gallery
in Charlotte, NC, Presents A Group Exhibition
Providence Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibit, The Far Away and Nearby, featuring a collection of select landscape and seascape oil paintings depicting regional areas as well as distant locales such as Tuscany and Provence. The show features gallery artists, Gary Shelley, Kathy Caudill, Jim Fales and Lita Gatlin and will be on display July 3 - 31, 2009.
Now living in Gastonia, NC, Gary Shelley was born in Flint, MI. After a stint in the Marine Corps, Shelley decided to pursue his lifelong love of art by pursuing formal studies at the prestigious American Academy of Art in Chicago. Having majored in Commercial Arts, he went on to achieve a successful career in advertising, garnering several high-profile accounts with major companies including industry leaders, IBM, Auto Technical, Inc., General Motors and the Bendix Corporation.
Yet, despite these noteworthy accomplishments, Shelley always yearned to return to his true passion, fine art painting. Through the years, he privately pursued his love of drawing and painting, continuing to hone his skills until 1997, when he was able to dedicate himself to fine art painting fulltime. Shelley has become expert at using the palette knife to add depth to his compositions in those places where he finds the brush alone inadequate for creating the texture he wishes to create.
Kathy Caudill chooses her subject matter from the places and people with whom she has a strong personal connection. As an artist, she focuses on capturing the atmosphere of a place or scene first and foremost. For her, realism is secondary to accurately conveying mood to the observer.
Like Gary Shelley, Jim
Fales began his career working as a commercial artist, eventually
opening his own graphic design studio in Glendale, OH. After retiring,
he relocated to Waxhaw, NC, where he continues to seek out the
untarnished landscape for his compositions.
Popular artist Lita Gatlin explains, "I am always amazed
at the colors in nature and how they constantly change due to
daylight and atmosphere." The quest to accurately record
these changes and do justice to such a vast choice of subject
matter keeps these artists fascinated, challenging them to find
new ways to explore land and sea.
All of the artists in this group show share a deep love of nature and a commitment to conservation and preservation efforts to prevent further encroachment from unrestricted development. Each of the featured painters cite nature as a primary source of inspiration for their art.
