July Issue 2009
Shain Gallery
in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Terry Delapp & Paul Hunter
Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting the exhibit, New Works, featuring works by Terry Delapp and Paul Hunter, on view through July 31, 2009. These artists offer a contrast of paintings from tranquil tonalist landscapes to minimalist and modern metallics.
Terry Delapp describes himself as primarily a landscape painter, stylistically Neo-Tonalist working within a confine of classic composition and limited palette. Glazing, scumbling, and building textures in a traditional way results in work that is accessible and simplistic.
Delapp studied at the Chouinards Art Academy in Hollywood and at the University of California. He has been exhibiting his paintings in group shows since the early 80's in California and New Mexico. He has also had numerous solo exhibitions, including the Bakersfield Museum of Art, and his work can be viewed at the San Diego Museum of Art, and found in many private collections, including those of Steve Martin, Martin Mull, Joan Rivers, Julian Ganz and Robert Zemeckis. Delapp currently lives and works in California.
Internationally renowned for his uniquely luminous landscape paintings on gold and metal leaf, Paul Hunter has adapted a centuries-old technique to give expression to his Modernist vision. His abstract minimalist landscapes combine the exceptional glow and reflective qualities of the flat metals, with the emotional depth of gestural painting.
Hunter's work is in many private, corporate and museum collections across the world. He has had multiple solo and group exhibitions in galleries across the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, and in museums, including the Utstallningssalongen in Sweden, Andrea Horstmann-Osterloh Gallery in Germany, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Princeton University, Hammer Rolls-Royce, The Quebec Delegation in Paris, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Quebec Museum. He currently resides in Manhattan.
Located in beautiful Myers Park and surrounded by impressive towering trees and blossoming Crepe Myrtles, Shain Gallery has been on the forefront of the North Carolina art scene since 1998. The gallery represents many leading national and regional artists, and recently won the "Best of the Best Award" for best Charlotte gallery.
