July Issue 2010

Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Keith Norval

Artspace in Raleigh, NC, will present the exhibit, The Fish Show, featuring works by Keith Norval, on view in the Artspace Lobby from July 2 31, 2010.

Norval's new body of work is a celebration of fish. These oil paintings explore the intricacies and anatomies of fish in his painterly, whimsical style. Although upsetting to some ichthyologists since these fish aren't totally accurate, Norval works from the idea of a fish, rather than from a specific reference. With the news of the acidification of the ocean, oil-spills, over-fishing, and the giant pacific garbage patch, Norval aims to raise the public's awareness of marine life. "This show is for all the fish out there, even the ones that we don't know about yet."

Norval was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe. He attended the Savannah College of Art and Design, earning his Bachelors of Fine Arts in 2000. Since relocating to Raleigh, NC, he has been active in the arts community. Norval works in his studio at Artspace, teaches painting and printmaking at the Pullen Arts Center, and sessions during the Summer Arts Program at Artspace. Norval was awarded the Regional Artist Project Grant from the United Arts Council in 2003, and has painted murals in York Elementary in Raleigh and at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY. His work has been shown in Columbia, MO; Vail, CO; San Diego, CA; Greensboro, NC; Miami, FL, and NYC.

Artspace, a thriving visual art center located in downtown Raleigh, brings the creative process to life through inspiring and engaging education and community outreach programming, a dynamic environment of over 30 professional artists studios, and nationally acclaimed exhibitions. Approximately 95 artists hold professional memberships in the Artspace Artists Association. Thirty-five of these artists have studios located at Artspace. Artspace is located in Historic City Market in Raleigh at the corner of Blount and Davie Streets.

Artspace is supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, the Raleigh Arts Commission, individuals, corporations, and private foundations.
