Artists in Bluffton, SC, Features Works by Rosemary Hurkamp Meidenbauer
The
Society of Bluffton Artists in Bluffton, SC, is presenting the
exhibit, Beaches, By and Bye, featuring works by Rosemary
Hurkamp Meidenbauer, on view through July 31, 2010.
In this exhibit, Meidenbauer presents her lifelong love affair with the seashore. In her naïve style, she offers a variety of paintings in which she portrays the beaches where she has found joy while vacationing and the places, real and imagined, past and present, that capture an everlasting summer. The show is fresh and colorful, appealing to a broad range of tastes.
In her acrylic paintings Meidenbauer takes us from a busy French port to a South American harbor, where the people seem to be living in a timeless world. Next to those images, our own Hilton Head Island is depicted in vibrant color. In a series of paintings inspired by a recent visit to the south of England, she conveys a sense of nostalgia in the passing of happy times on Cornwall's coast.
Having grown up in Westchester County and New York City, Meidenbauer pursued her higher education at Boston University School of management and earned a doctorate in Adult and Higher Education. Before starting a training and consulting company in Washington, DC, she held a number of education positions including university dean in both Boston and Washington.
Art has always been an avocation and, although primarily self-taught, Meidenbauer was lucky enough to have had some fine instructors from Boston University, Harvard, and the Ringling School, notably William Jewell and John Bryans. They encouraged her proclivity toward naïve or "folk" art. Now she works in acrylic, oil, and watercolor, producing both naïve and traditional paintings of all sizes. She currently shows in New York City (Contemporary American Folk Art Gallery) and in Virginia (Jarrett-Thor Gallery) as well as locally. Meidenbauer lives on Hilton Head Island and is an instructor at the Art League Academy.
