July Issue 2010
Upstairs Artspace
in Tryon, NC, is Focal Point for Art Trek Tryon
Art Trek Tryon, foothills open studios, is a great way to discover the immense talent in the Carolina foothills. On Saturday, July 24, 2010, from 10am to 5pm and Sunday, July 25, 2010, from noon to 5pm, nearly 40 artists from Tryon, Saluda, Columbus, Mill Spring and Green Creek, NC, as well as Landrum, SC, open their studios to the public. On Friday, July 23, an exhibit for participating artists opens at the Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, with a Preview of works that can be found on the tour from 5 to 8pm. The exhibit runs through Aug. 21, 2010.
The art covers many favorite forms: painting, pottery, folk art, woodturning and woodcarving, metal work, indoor and outdoor sculpture. During the tour (or "trek"), the artists will talk about their art and demonstrate how they make it. Much of the art will be for sale.
Extra pleasures of the tour are the scenery and tucked-away places like Miller Mountain and Green Creek. Many studios have beautiful views. Some artists have private galleries.
The Upstairs Artspace will be open during the weekend for people to pick up a brochure with a map and driving directions, and water will be available. The gallery is located at 49 S. Trade Street (next to the movie theater). Bright orange "open studio" signs will direct people to individual artists. There's no charge for the event.
