Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Amy Dobbs
Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present an exhibit of new works by Amy Dobbs, on view from July 1 - 30, 2011.
Born in Richmond, VA, in 1970, she has studied in the US and Europe and then made her home in Nimes, in the South of France, where she moved in 1995. While in high school, she received the Congressional Award for High School Art Students as well as the A.J. Fletcher Scholarship to study art at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. Two years later, Dobbs earned the title “Art Student of the Year.”
Dobbs returned to Europe following college graduation as a studio artist in Berlin, Germany for two years, then returned to the States as an Associate Artist for the Charles Lindbergh Fresco Project in Little Falls, MN. When the fresco was completed, Dobbs returned to Europe to study with Richard Maury.
While still in high school, Dobbs had her first significant showing, at the Congressional Offices in Washington, DC, in 1998. Other shows include private and group venues in Paris and London as well as those in the US from Oklahoma to the Shain Gallery. In total, the awards and shows given Dobbs are indicative of the caliber of work that Dobbs has achieved.
Dobbs works in oil on either linen or wood panels that she prepares with a rabbit skin gesso and paints “live” in front of the subject believing that “nature is our best teacher.” Dobbs is a formidable realist painter, equally skilled in landscape, still life and portrait with an extraordinary ability with color. Her “classic with a twist” choices in subject matter and composition give her exquisite paintings a wonderful individuality.
Located in beautiful Myers Park, Shain Gallery has been on the forefront of the North Carolina art scene since 1998. The gallery represents many leading national and regional artists, and was recently voted once again the “Best of the Best” for best Charlotte gallery.
