Art League of
Hilton Head in Hilton Head Island, SC, Offers Works by Charles
C. Gruppé
The Art League of Hilton Head will present an exhibit of Charles C. Gruppé's recent paintings in oil and acrylic, on view in the Art League's Gallery, in Pineland Station Mall, on Hilton Head Island, SC, from Aug. 11 through Sept. 12, 2009.
Charles C. Gruppé comes from one of America's most respected families of artists. His grandfather, Charles Paul Gruppé (1860-1940), studied and painted in Europe until moving to Rochester, NY. His uncles, sculptor Karl (1893-1982) and painter Emile (1896-1978) were successful and widely recognized for their work. Charles's father Paulo Gruppé was a gifted cellist.
Gruppé says that
he paints in a "controlled impressionistic style, combining
clean color with a sense of detail." He presents subjects
with swift sure strokes of the brush, a technique that is confident
and yet carefree. Closely observed his paintings are loose
almost abstract. However, when you step back, the brushstrokes
blend and the images become real an exciting, unrestrained
way to paint. Gruppé's most popular works are seascapes
depicting the Carolina Coast. He is also an acclaimed teacher
in both acrylic and oil.
Gruppé studied at Yale University, Columbia University,
and at the National University of Mexico. He earned a Masters
of Fine Art while on a fellowship at Columbia and awarded a Fulbright
Fellowship Grant to study in Italy. While there he received an
Italian Government Award. Gruppé is collected worldwide
and he's listed in Who's Who in American Art.
The Art League of Hilton
Head is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to
