August Issue 2009
Shain Gallery
in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Jim Chapman, Jane Schmidt, &
Cassandra Gillens
Shain Gallery in Charlotte,
NC, will be featuring an exhibit of new works by Jim Chapman,
Jane Schmidt, and Cassandra Gillens, on view from Aug. 7 - 29,
2009. Each of these artists use color in unique and expressive
ways, and this show promises to illuminate the impact color can
have on our creative senses.
Jim Chapman's work lends a contemporary feel to more traditional
subjects, such as authentic Lowcountry sweetgrass baskets and
farm landscapes, but can be as light and whimsical as chocolate-covered
doughnuts. He collects these one-of-a kind baskets that inspire
his paintings, and the resulting works are some of his best sellers.
His pieces are vibrant and offer high-color impact while still
referencing their natural roots and traditional inspirations.
Chapman has been a working, exhibiting, and award-winning artist
since the 1970's when he studied in the southern Appalachian mountains
of North Carolina.
Jane Schmidt is inspired by abstract expressionists, and she uses the subject of landscape to explore the edge between abstraction and representation with an emphasis on the expressive use of color. Using decisive brush marks, Schmidt commingles vibrant colors to create a striking visual experience for every viewer.
Cassandra Gillens is
a self-taught artist, residing in Beaufort, SC. Born in Boston,
MA, she was always creative and artistic, beginning her fascination
with color in the form of colored chalks. Gillens' fondest memories
of her visits to South Carolina inspired her to paint visions
of the Lowcountry's comforting southern culture in the most vibrant
tones. Her paintings reveal her love with vivid colors of the
southern seasons and images of classic southern living. Her work
was featured in 2008's film Nights in Rodanthe with Richard
Gere.
