MESH Gallery in Morganton, NC, Features Works by Dan Smith

MESH Gallery in Morganton, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Colored by Nature, featuring large format, boldly painted oils on canvas by Dan Smith, on view through Aug. 27, 2010.

"This body of work is my way of celebrating North Carolina's natural beauty, with its vibrant colors of the seasons," explains Smith, who was inspired by North Carolina foothill and mountain landscapes where he hikes. Smith's earlier paintings in this series incorporate representative elements with powerful abstract passages. His newest pieces, while purely abstract, resemble landscape formats.

Smith's art has been featured in more than 100 exhibitions throughout the country, including the prestigious National Academy Museum in New York City, the Taos Art Museum in Taos, NM, the Academy of Art in San Francisco, CA, and the South Carolina State Museum, Columbia, SC.

Smith has received BFA and MFA degrees from East Carolina University and the University of South Carolina, respectively. Before moving to Hickory, NC, he spent more than 15 years teaching studio art and humanities at colleges in South Carolina and Virginia, including Claflin College, in Orangeburg, SC, Hampton University, in Hampton, VA, and Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond, VA. He currently teaches art appreciation at Caldwell Community College.
