Rozzo
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC, will present the exhibit, Wing, Leaf, Petal, featuring birds and botanicals, on view in the Nature Art Gallery from Aug. 6 - 29, 2010.
As the title implies, birds and botanicals are the subject matter of these paintings. Rozzo's work reflects a fascination with organic shapes and an eye for pattern and design inherent in the natural world. In her artist statement she expounds on the source of her inspiration. "Even in urban environments dominated by concrete, asphalt, glass and steel, humans share a world populated with botanical and animal life."
Like humans, Rozzo says birds are engaged in a continuous cycle of seeking shelter, gathering food, mating, raising young and migrating; and that for most people that live in urban and suburban environments, interaction with birds is the single most common experience with wildlife.
Rozzo has been teaching, drawing and painting for over 20 years and began her career in upstate New York working in traditional watercolor techniques. Much of her work is informed by her initial experiences as a watercolorist. She now works in pencil, pastel, oil, watercolor, acrylic and collage imagery. Rozzo often begins a work with gesture drawing because she likes being part of the ancient tradition of humans making marks. She then employs painting techniques including the layering of transparent paint over paint or collaged elements. She is most pleased when a work successfully employs all three techniques.
Rozzo has taught locally at the NC State Crafts Center and Wake Technical Community College. Her work is in private collections from New York to Florida.
