NC Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, NC, Offers Works by Maureen O’Neill
NC Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, NC, will present an exhibit of recent painting by Maureen O’Neill, on view in the Mims Arts Gallery, from Aug. 16 through Sept. 29, 2013. A reception will be held on Sept. 13, from 7-9pm.
Maureen O’Neill is an abstract painter working in a variety of media. Her paintings refer to our familiar surroundings and in particular to those in her personal life. She says her work depends on everyday moments of seeing…visual moments, both immediate and from memory. Her images are not representational but an attempt to find their visual essence, “a way that reconnects with the core of the experience, its visual magic, and rightness.” Bold design, modulated color, and emphatic brushwork are the painterly qualities in O’Neill’s abstractions.
The artist received her BFA in Painting from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and her MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. While at RISD she received the Award of Excellence for outstanding work as a graduate student and the Brown University Teaching Fellowship. O’Neill has exhibited throughout the Northeast and Southeast and became Assistant Professor of Art at Flagler College, St. Augustine, FL, in 1998.
O’Neill moved with her family to Tarboro, NC, in 2006 and has continued to teach part-time at Barton College, Wesleyan College and Edgecombe Community College. She serves on the board of the Tarboro Community Outreach and is a member of the Edgecombe County Arts Council.
On view in the Mims Art Gallery through Aug. 10, 2013, is the exhibit, Rocky Mount: Art Buddies – Different Visions, Tammi Barnes and Clara Daughtridge. The two talented friends have been pursuing their art from quite different places.
