Cabarrus Arts
Council in Concord, NC, Features Deceptive Art and Juried Show
The Cabarrus Arts Council in Concord, NC, is presenting several exhibits including: For Real?, featuring works by 16 artists who work at deception and the Cabarrus Art Guild Juried Show, both on view in the Arts Council Galleries, located in the Historic Courthouse through Oct. 10, 2009.
A new exhibition celebrating trompe l'oeil, artwork that fools the eye by mimicking reality, includes artwork by 16 artists. There are images of foods that look ready to eat, books seemingly ready to have the pages turned and two-dimensional works that almost have to be touched to comprehend they are not three-dimensional. The show presents artwork created to look very real in ceramics, acrylics, oil, glass, wood and paper.
Participating artists in this exhibition include: Dana Brown of Asheville, NC, offers urban architecture paintings in casein; Stuart Dunkel of Massachusetts offers still life oil paintings of foods, musical instruments, interior details and critters; Michael Creed of Lynchburg, VA, has contributed furniture and functional sculpture; Katherine Grossfeld of Charlotte, NC, offers oil paintings of everyday objects such as toiletries, candy and cleaning products; Patti Quinn Hill of Weaverville, NC, has offered baskets woven of heavy cotton archival paper; Joel Hunnicutt of Siler City, NC, offers vessels assembled of 100-300 small pieces of wood; and Philip Jackson of Oxford, MI, contributed still life paintings of unlikely groups of everyday objects.
Sharon Moody
Missy and Sandy Kaolin of Massachusetts offered lifelike, whimsical pottery depicting food; Rob Levin of Burnsville, NC, has contributed blown glass vegetables and vessels; Jon Littleton and Kate Vogel of Bakersville, NC, offer blown and cast glass bags; Johannes Michelsen offers sculpted wood hats; Sharon Moody offers photorealistic paintings; John D. Richards of Burnsville, NC, has contributed paper lamps and sculptures; and Robert Tynes of Asheville, NC, offers paintings that combine abstract brush marks with trompe l'oeil illusionism.
