City Art Gallery
in Columbia, SC, Offers Works by Jo Dean Bauknight
City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, will present the exhibit, Panache, featuring oil paintings by Columbia artist Jo Dean Bauknight, on view from Sept. 10 through Oct. 3, 2009.
According to Gallery Director Wendy Wells, "When art supplies leave our store, we seldom see the results. City Art is proud to display the work of one of our longtime art supply clients."
Bauknight describes her paintings as an energetic profusion of brush strokes that create a movement and a vibrancy that invite a strong emotional response. After decades of painting she has developed a variety of styles ranging from impressionistic to the very finely detailed.
Bauknight believes oil is the best medium to express her love of the landscapes, seascapes, flowers and people of SC. In sharp contrast to her meticulously rendered works, her impressionistic paintings, featured in this exhibition are full of bright bold colors that contrast and harmonize at the same time striving to capture the ephemeral effect of light.
Born in Conway, SC, Bauknight was educated at Columbia College and the Atlanta Art Institute. A former art teacher at the Hammond School and mother of three decided to become a full time painter. Aside from occasional trips to see her grandchildren, she paints six to eight hours a day.
"I believe God
put us on earth to serve as a conduit to pass on to others whatever
comes to us. If one views my paintings and feels the pride, love,
and joy; and the spirit and unique charm of a person, place or
thing as I do, then I am successful," says Bauknight.
