Gallery Up in
Rock Hill, SC, Features Works by Phil Moody, Tim Buchman and Paul
Murphy
Gallery Up, located
on the 2nd floor of the Gettys Art Center in Rock Hill, SC, is
presenting the exhibit, Luce Italiano: Photography From Italy,
a group exhibition featuring works by Phil Moody, Tim Buchman
and Paul Murphy, on view through Sept. 25, 2009.
"At various stages in the past few years we have each independently
been attracted to photographing in Italy," remarks fine
art photographer and Winthrop University Professor, Phil Moody.
"In each case we have had the opportunity to continue
this work and build on previous visits. What is here is 'work
in progress', since all three of us will undoubtedly be returning
to make new work."
Artists have been visiting Italy for many centuries, culminating in 'The Grand Tour' of the 18th and 19th centuries. It can be argued, with ease, that our civilization has been modeled on the political and social discourse of the Renaissance and Classical Era. So visiting Italy is, in many ways, going back to our cultural roots. Of course Italy itself is not static, but has become modern and part of globalization just like everywhere else. Perhaps this is part of the attraction, seeing the many 'layers' of its culture on open display in virtually every street.
Tim Buchman has used a medium-format camera with careful preparation before each subject. His work is made with a respect that emphasizes the nature of the classical landscape tradition within art. In similar manner to the attention paid over many years to cultivating ancient olive trees, he makes prints which pay homage to traditional craft.
Paul Murphy, by contrast, uses a medium-format camera in rapid and spontaneous fashion, shooting from a lower vantage-point and inserting himself into the drama of everyday events. His approach is intuitive, built on an innate sharp sense of design. His use of the camera is somewhat aggressive, always keeping us on the alert for what will come next.
Phil Moody has used the small-format camera in gentler fashion, making color compositions which peel back the layers of history on which this fascinating country is built. It is an approach that sees the world as a theatrical stage, sometimes utilizing a laconic humor befitting the society it portrays.
