MYST in Spartanburg,
SC, Features Works by Page J. Davis
An exhibit of improvisational abstract paintings by Page J. Davis will open Sept. 17 at MYST on Morgan Square in downtown Spartanburg, SC. This show will remain on exhibit until Oct. 12, 2009.
Davis's intuitive work combines disparate images gleaned from memories and voiced through line, form and color. After beginning a painting, she states, "I put aside any ideas of the direction that the work should go. I am just responding to previous marks, decisions and actions, and letting the work evolve spontaneously. Combining disparate images creates dialogue that would not have been pre-planned, and this excites me. Making marks, reacting, arranging, and rearranging the images is the game of improvisation."
Davis was born in Atlanta, GA, and grew up in Spartanburg. After studies abroad in painting through the University of Georgia in Cortona, Italy, she received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. Five years later she continued her education at Boter-Santalo in Barcelona, Spain, then went on to achieve her Master of Arts in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, GA.
Over the last thirteen years, Davis has exhibited her work in group, two person and solo shows from the Southeast to the Northwest. She was chosen for New American Paintings, MFA Annual, published by Open Studios Press and has had her work published in an exhibition catalog for Scene, Unseen: A National Art Show, Eastern New Mexico University. Davis has been an art instructor in institutions that include The American School of Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain and the Carolina Classical School in Columbus, NC. Since 2003, she has been teaching art to private students.
