University of
South Carolina in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Bill Hosterman
The University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, is presenting the exhibit, EXTERNAL SIGNING: The Printmaking Artwork of Bill Hosterman, on view in McMaster Gallery in the Department of Art at the University, through Oct. 2, 2009.
Hosterman's works explore ideas about individual and human contexts. Through collage, he constructs and deconstructs each image, keeping what feels essential and eliminating excess. Pairing and juxtaposing the elements allows him to redefine the image into something new.
These non-representational works allow Hosterman to explore without restriction, both in the work and in the mind of the viewer. This openness he feels enables him to create a broader dialogue with the viewer, providing greater opportunities for interpretation and involvement.
Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Hosterman hiked the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail in 1990 before beginning his undergraduate studies at Penn State University. After earning his BFA in printmaking in 1995, he received a Fulbright scholarship to study printmaking for a year in South Africa. He completed his MFA in printmaking at Indiana University-Bloomington in 1999.
Hosterman has been teaching
at Grand Valley State University in Michigan since 1999. Now an
associate professor, his work has been shown both nationally and
internationally, including exhibits in Hawaii, Italy, Germany,
China and the United Arab Emirates.
