S & S Art Supplies in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Jonathan Calicutt
S & S Art Supplies in Columbia, SC, will present Magic & Loss: Works by Jonathan Calicutt, on view from Sept. 5 - 30, 2013. A reception will be held on Sept. 5, from 6-9pm.
Calicutt’s mixed media works explode off the wall with juxtaposed imagery and color, unlike anything you’ve seen. Callicutt’s work is that of combination and contrast. Early training in comic arts under Bo Hampton was followed by formal study at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and the University of Georgia’s BFA Printmaking program.
Despite a pervasive notion that the graphic element of the comic world has no real place in fine art, Callicutt integrates, rather than occludes, the elements of his artistic education. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States in Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, Los Angeles and San Francisco as well as Florence, Italy.
Callicutt offers the following artist statement, “The word ‘magic’ means many things to many people. For myself, at its core, it has always represented the idea of making the impossible possible and the possibility of converting the fantastic to actual. The belief that incredible things can, in fact, exist, happen, be.
Admittedly, a childlike notion, perhaps.
The harsh realities of daily life have an erosive effect on this ideal. And it recently occurred to me that one of the saddest experiences in life is the recognition that magic has gone out of the world. The loss of belief that incredible things can, in fact, exist, happen, be.”
“It has been often posited that this loss is, quite simply, growing up,” adds Callicutt. “I don’t know. But I struggle with it, whatever its true nature. The works in this exhibition were born of this belief, this loss, and a single question that can have no single answer: What would the child that you were have to say to the adult that you are?”
