Ad Rates & Sizes (effective as of 2/01/08, last changed two years ago)
Carolina Arts is a free arts newspaper which is published monthly. It is the largest visual arts publication distributed in North and South Carolina. We distribute 10-11 thousand copies throughout the two states, concentrating in the areas where we think people interested in the visual arts will come in contact with the paper. - area we are working in partnership with All our advertisers receive copies of the paper.
The base rate for Carolina Arts is currently $21.00 per column inch. The column width is approximately 2 and 3/8 (2.375 inches). The paper is based on 4 columns. Therefore the cost per insertion of a one column ad one inch in depth,[ 2 3/8" x 1" (2.375" x 1")] would be $21.00. A one column ad, five inches deep would normally cost $105. ( 1 col. x 5" or 5 x $21 = $105.). A two column ad, five inches deep would normally be $210. ( 2 col. x 5" or 10 x $21. = $210.). Your ad can be any size you want and to figure the price you would just add the number of column inches up and multiply that figure by $21.00.
NOTE: All sizes are given as width by height - width first.
But, we have a better offer in that we have created some standard ad sizes that fit our paper's layout easier -- therefore we give the advertiser a better rate for using these standard sizes.
Black & White ads:
Our Gallery Guide Map ad size is (1 col, x 1 7/8") or ( 2 3/8"wide x 1 7/8"high. If you need the decimals it's 2.375 x 1.875. The cost of this size is $42. and does not have to go on a page with one of our maps.
Our standard 1/16 page ad, available in two sizes: 1col. x 3 7/8" [ 2 3/8" x 3 7/8" (2.375 x 3.875)] or 2 col. x 1 7/8" [4 29/32" x 1 7/8" (4.9063" x 1.875")]. A 1/16 page ad is $65 where the normal base rate cost would be $84.
Our standard 1/8 page ad works the same way. A 1/8 page ad can be one of three sizes: 1 col. x 7 7/8" [2 3/8" x 7 7/8" (2.375" x 7.875")], 2 col. x 3 7/8" [ 4 29/32" x 3 7/8" (4.9063" x 3.875")], or 4 col. x 1 7/8" (10" x 1 7/8"). Our price for using these standard sizes is $90, where the normal base rate cost would be $168. Any way you put it, that's a better deal.
Our standard 1/4 page ads work the same way. You have a choice of three sizes: 1 col. x 16" ( 2 3/8" x 16" or 2.375" x 16"), 2 col. x 7 7/8" [4 29/32" x 7 7/8" (4.9063" x 7.875")], or 4 col. x 3 7/8" (10" x 3 7/8"). Our price for a 1/4 page ad is $170, where the normal base rate cost would be $336.
Our 1/3 page ad is only available in one size: 4 col. x 6 1/4" (10" x 6 1/4" or 10" x 6.25"). The cost of a 1/3 page ad is $225, where the normal base rate cost would be $540.
Our standard 1/2 page ad gives you two choices on size: 2 col. x 16" [4 29/32" x 16" (4.9063" x 16")] or 4 col. x 7 7/8" [10" x 7 7/8" (10" x 7.875")]. The cost of a 1/2 page ad is $280.
The full page ad rate ( 4 col. x 16" or 10" x 16") is $560., much less than the normal rate.
These are all rates for black & white ads - for color ad prices call (well ahead of the time you would like to run the ad). Beyond our color cover, more color ads have to be added four pages at a time and take a bit of co-ordination to make that possible - so call us early and let us know what you are intterested in as far as color ads go.
Photos in ads (we produce):
For each 1/4 page ad or smaller, you can have
one photo included for the prices given.
For 1/3 and 1/2 page ads, you can have two photos included.
For full page ads, up to four photos are included in the price.
All extra photos, over the quantities listed above, will carry an extra $10. charge each.
In Copy Ready Ads you can have as many photos as you wish. These can be put onto zip disks, cds, or floppies, but need to be accompanied by all screen and printer fonts, and a print out of what the ad should look like. The current ways we accept ads are outlined EPS files, PDFs with the fonts embedded and subset to 95%. If you don't have either of these capabilities, please call - other options are available. The EPS of PDF can be e-mailed to: (info@carolinaarts.com). We do not take publisher files! We are unable to open or use them. Please call if this is the only option you have, we can work with you to get your ad in a compatible format.
Ad placement
Ad placement is based on size and length of time advertising with the paper although we try to accommodate special requests.
Deadlines
Our advertising deadline is on the 12th of the month prior to the next published issue or prior to the month when your event will happen. Examples: the deadline for a May issue would be April 12. If your event is taking place from May 2-5, since our paper takes about a week to deliver, this should be advertised in our April issue and the deadline for it would be March 12. If your ad isn't copy-ready, you need to get us the materials for the ad as soon as possible, preferably by the 10th. If you are sending a copy-ready ad, anytime on the 12th will be fine. That gives us a day (in most cases) to get back with you if there are any problems. You do need to consider that if the 12th falls on a weekend, we need to get your ad by midday on the Friday before that, or if you are availble all day on Saturday, by that Saturday at noon. Again, that's so we will have time to get with you if there are any problems.

Must be approved ahead of time.
