She quickly became enthralled with the spontaneous and freeing nature of the process and for the past 8 years has loved spreading the word on monotypes coast to coast. She focuses on non-toxic materials, water based inks, printmaking without a press, and methods and materials suited to home studios and classrooms not equipped with presses and elaborate ventilation systems. This two-day workshop will begin with basic approaches such as single plate reductive monotypes, multiple drop reductive monotypes using process colors and ghost printing from multiple plates. Sessions will also include single plate additive and directly painted monotypes, working with stencils in monotypes, chine colle (a method of collage during monotype) and facilitating student experimentation. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. To register enclose payment of $150. Make check payable to SCWS & return to: Kim Richards, SCWS, 7 Oxford Dr., Cartersville,GA 30120. Upstate Visual Arts in Greenville, SC, will host a four-day watercolor workshop with award-winning artist and teacher Tom Lynch, on June 19-22, 2006 in Greenville. (location soon TBA). The price per student is $375 (UVA member rate) or $400 (regular rate). Workshop hours are 9:30am 4:30pm each day. The following excerpt is taken from Tom Lynch's website (www.tomlynch.com): "When you look at Tom Lynch's paintings, be prepared to surrender your imagination to an exciting world of shimmering color and captivating mood. Tom has that special ability to take an ordinary subject and bring out its extraordinary qualities, imbuing even the most humble subject with a quiet grandeur or robust majesty. "Tom is a natural teacher who is especially intuitive in developing the student's own individual needs. For 25 years students from all over the world have attended his successful workshops and acclaimed them with high regard. When Tom speaks, he talks openly and candidly. His paintings have that same intensity, expression, and direct appeal. "In his five award winning PBS television series and numerous videos, Tom has been happy to share his expertise and knowledge with his students. He has written five books on watercolor, and his latest, Tom Lynch's Watercolor Secrets, has reached international acclaim. Perhaps it is in technique that Tom shows his greatest genius. Using several varieties of spray bottles, sometimes an electric eraser and always a lot of bravura, Tom lifts off and melts away the paint, producing the type of ethereal, light quality that is associated with the Old Masters. In Tom's books, TV series, tapes and workshops he taps into the creative process, prodding the creative instinct, gently pushing the student to explore and fulfill his or her own artistic abilities; many of whom have become successful professionals. "Tom's credentials include: election into the illustrious "Society of American Impressionists," "Who's Who in American Art," and "Signature Membership" in many national watercolor societies. Tom was honored with a one-man exhibition in the American Embassy in Paris, France. Much of his work has been published and some of his best paintings are available in Limited Edition prints. It's no surprise that his paintings are included in private and corporate collections throughout the world.."
