Sept. 2005 will mark the opening of the Greenville Museum of Art's Visual Arts Academy in Greenville, NC. The Academy will be a place where students can develop their visual art skills. The first of its kind in eastern North Carolina, an academy devoted entirely to the visual arts. Greenville Museum of Art executive director Barbour Strickland explains... "There are many talented students in Pitt County and some of them do not receive enough visual arts instruction to enable them to fully develop their talents. For example, in the Pitt County Public Schools, students receive around 20 - 30 minutes of art instruction per week. Our goal is to give select visual art students a unique learning experience and to develop their visual art skills. Students will be mentored by visual art educators who are licensed by the State of North Carolina. There educators will work with the students to further their learning within the bounds of the NC Standard Course of Study in the Visual Arts. We will facilitate the education, exploration and application of artistic learning in a more expansive and guided studio setting". The Academy is open to students in Pitt County, NC, in grades 4 - 7 who exhibit high aptitude, interest and skills in the visual arts. Classes, which begin in Sept., will meet from 4-5:30pm on Tues. and Thurs. For more information and a brochure contact Barbour Strickland at 252/758-1946 or at (www.gmoa.org).
